How a Flow Star Changed my Life
Last February, I purchased a Flow Star online and challenged myself to learn a few tricks for festivals that summer. Little did I know, that piece of cloth would change my life.
What is a Flow Star?
If you’re not familiar with a Flow Star, it’s a type of flow art that involves a geometrical spinning cloth. Flow arts are a combination of dance, circus movements, and object manipulation to create visual, flowing motion. It’s often described as “moving meditation” and uses creative expression to achieve a “flow state.” Common props used in flow arts include poi, hula hoops, staff, and fans—many of which can even have fire or LED attachments.
People who regularly practice flow arts are engaging in an easy and fun form of exercise and, in turn, may experience health benefits, including naturally bringing awareness to their bodies.
My Experience
Flowing has taught me countless things about myself.
I can learn new things! It sounds simple enough, but people are so quick to assume they won’t be able to learn something new without putting in an overwhelming amount of energy. It’s never too late to pick something up, and yes, it does take practice. But an open mind and excitement to learn will ultimately make the process easier.
I’ve also learned how to be in my body—and feel confident there. To flow, you have to move. Move in ways your body never has before. This opens up a whole new world. Once you begin to settle into a flow state, it all starts to click. Then comes the next step: flowing in front of other people. That takes vulnerability and confidence—to show how you move, even with mistakes. The mistakes make it authentic, and when you learn how to pick it up and keep going, that’s when you know it’s really clicked for you.
Movement is medicine. When you have stagnant energy, it can affect your outer world. Movement can break up that energy and get things flowing again. Sometimes when I find myself feeling lost, down, or stagnant, I’ll pick up my star for 10 minutes—and suddenly, things start flowing in my life again.
The community is both small and expansive, and it exists everywhere. You’ll make some of the most unexpected connections through flowing, and that’s exactly what the world needs. A simple “Hey, Flowmie” can open a whole new world for you. Being authentic and sharing what you can do can introduce you to new types of flow and new ways others express themselves.
With all the separation in this world, there are still so many things that can bring us together. To think that a spinning cloth star can connect people little by little is incredibly promising to me. It’s never too late to start something new. Flow Stars are an amazing place to begin if you don’t have an outlet yet.
How Can You Get Started?
I’m lucky enough to represent a brand of Flow Stars that I love and have used since the beginning of my journey. They tend to be a bit heavier than other brands, but they work exactly how I want them to.
